By the Sanwa X coaching team — reviewed by Head Coach Wataru Ochi (coach to ATP & WTA Tour professionals, academy founder since 2004) and Director of Tennis Kento Takeuchi (former ATP Tour professional, career-high ATP World No. 378). Published July 2026.
Walk past our rooftop courts at NTU@one-north on any evening and you will hear two distinct sounds: the deep thud of tennis balls and, from the PickleChoo Arena courts at the same address, the sharp pop of pickleball. Both sports now share our home at 11 Slim Barracks Rise in One North — and one of the most common questions our coaches hear in 2026 is: which one should I play?
As coaches who have competed on the ATP Tour and coached at Grand Slam level, our honest answer is: they are different sports that reward different things — and for many players in Singapore, the smartest answer is both.
How Tennis and Pickleball Differ
Learning curve. Pickleball is famously quick to pick up — the underhand serve, smaller court, and slower ball mean most beginners are enjoying rallies within their first session. Tennis takes longer to learn, but that technical depth is exactly what makes it so rewarding: there is always another level to reach, which is why players stay with it for decades. If you are starting tennis from zero, our beginner tennis lessons in Singapore are built for complete newcomers.
Physical demands. Tennis covers a much larger court and demands more running, making it one of the best full-body workouts available — our cardio tennis sessions are built around exactly that. Pickleball is lower impact, with shorter movements and less strain on shoulders and knees, which is one reason it has become Singapore’s fastest-growing sport across all age groups.
Social play. Both are social sports, but pickleball’s doubles-first format and walk-in culture make it especially easy to join a game. PickleChoo’s venues are open to the public daily from 6am to 10pm, with walk-ins welcome.
Why Our Coaches Recommend Playing Both
Coach Takeuchi puts it simply: racket skills transfer. The hand-eye coordination, split-step timing, and net instincts you build in one sport carry over to the other. We see adult students use pickleball as an easy-on-the-body second sport for social play, while tennis remains their primary training focus. Equally, pickleball players who take up tennis arrive with volley reflexes and court sense that accelerate their progress through our group class levels.
Because both sports live at the same One North address, cross-training is genuinely practical: a tennis class at Sanwa X and a social pickleball session at PickleChoo Arena can happen in the same week without changing your commute.
Where to Play Each Sport in Singapore

Pickleball: PickleChoo operates three public venues — PickleChoo Arena at One North, PickleChoo Prime at New Industrial Road, and PickleChoo Apex at Henderson — with pickleball lessons delivered by TAG-certified coaches.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is pickleball easier than tennis?
Easier to start, yes — most beginners rally within one session. But at competitive level, pickleball demands genuine skill, and tennis offers greater long-term technical depth. Neither is a lesser sport; they reward different strengths.
Can I play tennis and pickleball in the same place in Singapore?
Yes. At One North, Sanwa X Tennis Academy’s courts and PickleChoo Arena share the same address at 11 Slim Barracks Rise, a 7-minute walk from Buona Vista MRT.
Will playing pickleball hurt my tennis game?
In our coaching experience, no — for recreational and club players, the shared racket skills help more than the different swing mechanics hurt. Competitive tournament tennis players should keep tennis as their primary training volume, which their coach can structure appropriately.
Which should my child start with?
We recommend tennis as the foundation sport for children — its movement and technical demands build broader athletic skills. Sanwa X offers kids tennis lessons from age 4, and pickleball makes an excellent fun family addition later.
Still deciding? Contact us for a trial tennis lesson at One North, or call PickleChoo at 9029 8400 to book a pickleball session — and try both for yourself.
