Taking up tennis as an adult in Singapore is one of the most rewarding decisions you can make — for your fitness, your social life, and your mental sharpness. Yet many adults hesitate, wondering whether they have started too late, or unsure what to expect from their first lesson. This guide answers every question adult beginners ask us at Sanwa X Tennis Academy, drawing on over two decades of coaching adults at NTU@one-north.
Is It Too Late to Start Tennis as an Adult in Singapore?
No — and this is the question we hear most often. Adults of all ages start tennis at Sanwa X every month. Our group classes include players in their 30s, 40s, 50s, and beyond, all progressing steadily with the right coaching. The key difference between adult and junior learners is not ability — it is approach. Adults tend to be more analytical, which helps enormously in understanding technique. The main challenge is unlearning any bad habits formed through casual play before formal lessons begin.
The International Tennis Federation recognises that adult participation in tennis is growing globally, with recreational adult tennis among the fastest-growing segments of the sport. Singapore’s year-round playing weather makes it particularly well-suited to adult uptake.
What to Expect in Adult Tennis Lessons at Sanwa X
Your First Lesson
In your first adult group lesson, your coach will assess your natural movement and any existing habits before introducing the fundamental grip and stance. There is no pressure to rally competitively from day one. At Sanwa X, new adult students begin in our Starter (ST) class, designed specifically for complete beginners — people who have never held a racquet, or who played casually years ago and want to rebuild properly.
Adult Group Lesson Levels at Sanwa X
Our adult programme is structured across five progressive levels, each with clear skill benchmarks so you always know where you stand and what you are working toward:
- Starter (ST) — For complete beginners. Learn grip, stance, and basic forehands. Build toward consistent 10+ ball rallies.
- Beginner (BG) — For players with about a year of experience. Develop consistency and movement around the court.
- Intermediate (IM) — Refine volleys and learn doubles formations. Suitable for confident social players.
- Advanced (AD) — Upper intermediate. All strokes refined with input from ATP-experienced coaches.
- Tournament (TN) — For competitive players. Master tactical responses and advanced techniques for match play.
Coaches assess students regularly and recommend level transitions when appropriate — there is no pressure to advance before you are ready. Most adult beginners spend three to six months in the Starter class before progressing to Beginner level.
Why Adult Tennis Lessons Are Different from Junior Coaching
Adult coaching at Sanwa X is specifically designed around how adults learn — not a scaled-down version of our junior programme. Adults respond better to clear explanations of why a technique works, not just repetition. Our coaches, including former ATP World No. 36 Yuichi Sugita, bring both technical precision and the ability to articulate complex biomechanics in plain language.
Adults also have different motivations than juniors: most seek a combination of fitness, social connection, and personal challenge. Our group lessons are structured to deliver all three — improving your game while building genuine friendships in a supportive, non-competitive atmosphere.
Group vs Private Tennis Lessons for Adults
Both formats suit adult learners — the right choice depends on your goals and schedule. Group lessons offer excellent value (classes run throughout the week including evenings and weekends), a ready-made community of players at your level, and the motivation of training alongside others. Most adult beginners thrive in our group environment.
Private lessons (from $150/hour, with package discounts available) deliver faster technical progress because every correction is directed at you. We recommend private sessions as a complement to group lessons — for example, one private session per month to address a specific weakness, alongside weekly group classes for volume and community.
How Quickly Do Adults Progress?
Most adult beginners at Sanwa X can sustain basic forehands and backhands within two to three months of weekly lessons, and enjoy comfortable social doubles within six to twelve months. Adults with prior racquet sports backgrounds — badminton, squash, or table tennis — typically progress 30–40% faster in early lessons due to existing hand-eye coordination.
Consistency is the single biggest factor. Adults who attend twice per week progress roughly three times faster than those who attend fortnightly. Even one structured lesson per week, combined with casual rallying between sessions, produces meaningful and visible improvement within a few months. What to Bring to Your First Adult Tennis Lesson
- Tennis racquet — A mid-range racquet (SGD 80–150) with a large head size (100–110 sq inches) is ideal for beginners. Racquets are not provided for group lessons.
- Court shoes — Non-marking tennis or court shoes. Running shoes do not provide adequate lateral support for hard courts.
- Water bottle — Singapore’s heat means hydration is essential, especially for evening sessions.
- Comfortable athletic wear — Light, breathable fabric suited to Singapore’s humidity.
Sanwa X provides all balls for group and private lessons. No other equipment is needed when you start.
Adult Tennis Lessons at NTU@one-north – A Community, Not Just Classes
One of the most common things we hear from adult students after six months at Sanwa X is that they came for the tennis and stayed for the community. Our rooftop courts at NTU@one-north, 11 Slim Barracks Rise, attract a diverse group of working professionals, expats, and long-term residents who share a love for the sport. Social connections formed in group classes regularly extend beyond the court.
Classes are available seven days a week, including early mornings, evenings after work, and weekend sessions — designed around the schedules of working adults in Singapore. See our full group lesson schedule for current timings.
